Hello Sports fans. Today is Monday, January 5, 2026. Colby's Commentary for the Week. First I would like to do a little follow up on last weeks comments regarding the CBA. I will try and keep this as brief as possible. It's been said that the players of the WNBA are willing to strike in 2026 if all of their demands are not met. In my opinion that would be a big mistake. So it's been said over and over, the WNBA has been in existence for almost 30 years and they have never turned a profit. Suddenly in 2024, 2025 the WNBA has made big strides in awareness, attendance and revenue stream. Viewership went up 170% from 2023. Attendance went up 48%. Merchandise sales went up a whopping 756%. And team evaluations increased 180%. Revenue went from $200 Million to around $2.35 Billion. These figures are astronomical. And I do not have to remind you the main attraction for the rise of these figures, like it or not. So my point is, ladies you have shown your worth and it is written in black and white. You have shown by action, not talk. But I think you need to prove yourself at least ONE more season. Make this season what we call in the movie industry, A Block Buster Season! Let 2026 be the year of all years. If 2026 is very successful as projected, now you truly have something to bargain with. You will have shown success, (3) years in a row. Then you will not only have three years of success, but a track record that will speak for itself. Now investors and sponsors will have made a profit on their investment. When this happens, investors will close their mouths and open their purses and wallets. All you ladies went to college so I know you comprehend what I am saying. Striking will cause bitterness. Coming to work and being successful will cause happiness, which in return will help you achieve your goal.
Now I would like to talk a little bit about LSU. I watched all the top 5 teams over the weekend; South Carolina, UCLA, Texas, UConn and LSU. Everyone took care of business except LSU. I see a storm brewing in the Bayou. And it's not just about Malaysia Fulwiley. It's about a team with potential but has problems that involve the entire team. I see a team with talent but the talent are not playing together as a team. I witness some selfishness, especially when it comes to offense. Fulwiley is always in the media and the media makes it seem as though it's always controversy between Fulwiley and her coach. I don't see this and I have watched at least 6 games of LSU. Every time I watch LSU and Malaysia play, she is constantly playing great defense and the shots she takes are good shots. She is the only player I see on LSU that follows her shot. I am not pointing any fingers, but Fulwiley is playing like an All Star, good team ball and the remainder of the team, well go see for yourself. The fact that the team averages 100 or so points a game says that there is a lot of shooting going on. Most of the teams they have played were not top tier teams. And the last two games were ranked teams and look what happened. LSU has dropped 2 in a row against top tier teams, Kentucky and Vanderbilt who are ranked #6 #7. I see three players really putting forth effort on defense; Fulwiley, Knox and Koval. I think Koval needs a bit more development. But from what I see she does work hard. As far as others on the team, it seems to be more of a shootout on offense. I'm not criticizing. I'm commenting on what I see. Kim Mulkey is a great coach. I have followed her since Baylor. I know she will figure it out. Malaysia, keep doing what you are doing. But you know you should have stayed at SC. You would be starting this year. That is all I am going to say. See you next week.
